About Pattaya
Pattaya is the largest city in Chonburi province and lies about 150 km southeast of Bangkok on the Gulf of Thailand. It is best known for its nightlife, but there is much more to do: beaches, boat trips to Ko Larn, the wooden Sanctuary of Truth, Nong Nooch Tropical Garden and the view from Pattaya Viewpoint on Khao Phra Tamnak. Jomtien Beach, south of the centre, is quieter and more popular with families. There are many hotels, restaurants and shopping malls, and day trips are easy to arrange. The sea is not as clear as on the Andaman coast, but the city is close to Bangkok and a logical weekend break. Choose your stay carefully, depending on whether you want peace or entertainment.
Best time to visit (indicative)
Best from November to February: drier and less hot, with calmer seas for beaches and boats. May to October is the rainy season, though showers are often short; March to May is very hot. Weather varies from year to year; this is a guideline based on the climate.
Getting there
From Bangkok by bus or minivan (about 2 to 2.5 hours) or from U-Tapao airport; in town songthaews and taxis run. Distances and travel times are rounded estimates.

- Sanctuary of Truth A huge wooden temple by the sea with elaborate carvings.
- Ko Larn A small island with beaches, reached by ferry or speedboat.
- Pattaya Viewpoint View of the bay from Khao Phra Tamnak, especially nice at sunset.
- Nong Nooch Garden A large tropical garden with plants and shows, just outside town.
