About Phatthalung

Phatthalung is a calm provincial capital in southern Thailand, surrounded by limestone hills and rice fields. The town lies near Songkhla Lake and is known for southern culture, such as nang talung and manora dance. A nearby sight is Thale Noi, a wetland area with water lilies and many waterbirds, especially beautiful in the cool months. The hill Khao Ok Thalu, with a hole through the rock, is a well-known landmark. In the caves around the town stand temples. The town itself is simple and local, with markets and eateries. Phatthalung is not a busy tourist city but a good stop for those wanting to get to know southern Thailand. Come in January to April for the driest weather. The town lies about 840 km south of Bangkok on the main southern railway line. A day visit is enough, but staying overnight gives more time for Thale Noi.

Best time to visit (indicative)

Driest from February to April, which is the best time for beaches and boats. From October to December a lot of rain falls (on Samui November is the wettest month, around 445 mm), and the sea can be rough. Weather varies from year to year; this is a guideline based on the climate.

Getting there

From Bangkok by train or bus (about 10 to 12 hours); from Hat Yai about 1.5 hours. Distances and travel times are rounded estimates.
