About Fang
Fang is a small town in the north of Chiang Mai province, on the way to the Myanmar border and the mountains near Tha Ton. It is less touristy than Pai but has beautiful surroundings. About 8 km northwest of town lie the Fang hot springs, where you can see hot water emerge from the ground. The Huai Luk Royal Project is an agricultural project providing farmland to Hmong villages, and Wat Tham Tap Tao is a peaceful temple with caves. If you drive further north you reach Tha Ton, and from there you can take a boat down the Kok River to Chiang Rai. Fang suits anyone seeking quiet and countryside. Come in the cool season for the best weather.
Best time to visit (indicative)
Best from November to February: cool and dry, with chilly mornings in the hills. From February to April smoke and haze from agricultural burning can limit visibility; June to October is the rainy season, green and quiet. Weather varies from year to year; this is a guideline based on the climate.
Getting there
From Chiang Mai by bus or car (about 3 to 4 hours) along route 107; continuing to Tha Ton is a short ride. Distances and travel times are rounded estimates.
