About Chiang Dao
Chiang Dao is a small town in Chiang Mai province, in a valley between green mountains north of Chiang Mai city. The main attractions are Chiang Dao Cave, about 5 km from the centre, and the mountain Doi Luang Chiang Dao, a conical limestone peak of 2,225 m, the third highest in Thailand. Pha Daeng National Park begins close to town and is an area of craggy mountains. There are also hot springs such as Pong Arng and Chiangdao Hot Spring, hilltop temples such as Wat Pa Bunnak, and quiet walks among rice fields. Chiang Dao suits anyone wanting to see the countryside and leave busy Chiang Mai for a moment. Bring a torch if you visit the cave and visit the surroundings early in the day.
Best time to visit (indicative)
Best from November to February: cool and dry, with chilly mornings in the hills. From February to April smoke and haze from agricultural burning can limit visibility; June to October is the rainy season, green and quiet. Weather varies from year to year; this is a guideline based on the climate.
Getting there
From Chiang Mai by songthaew or bus (about 1.5 to 2 hours); your own transport helps for the cave and the springs. Distances and travel times are rounded estimates.
