About Pai
Pai is a small town in Mae Hong Son province with about 3,000 inhabitants and a key stop on the Mae Hong Son Loop. The road from Chiang Mai has more than 700 curves, which makes the journey an experience in itself. In town there is a walking street with an evening market, yoga and cooking studios, small cafés and a relaxed atmosphere. In the surroundings you find Pai Canyon (Kong Lan), the WWII Memorial Bridge, the Chinese village of Santichon and hot springs such as Sai Ngam. You can go rafting, hiking and explore the valley by scooter. In season it is busy, in the rainy season much quieter. Pai suits anyone wanting to unwind, though in high season it can feel big and commercial.
Best time to visit (indicative)
Best from November to February: cool and dry, with chilly mornings in the hills. From February to April smoke and haze from agricultural burning can limit visibility; June to October is the rainy season, green and quiet. The cool dry season (November to February) is by far the most popular; in high season it is best to book ahead. Weather varies from year to year; this is a guideline based on the climate.
Getting there
From Chiang Mai by minivan along route 1095 (about 3 to 4 hours); the road is winding, so bring motion-sickness tablets if needed. Distances and travel times are rounded estimates.
