About Soppong

Soppong is a small town in Pang Mapha district, the northernmost district of Mae Hong Son province, with a population of mostly Shan and hill peoples. It lies on route 1095, between Pai and Mae Hong Son, and is a good stop for those driving the Mae Hong Son Loop. The region is known for its caves. Tham Lod is the best known: you glide through a large cave on a bamboo raft, and at sunset thousands of swiftlets fly out and in. Near Soppong lie also the Spirit Cave and other small caves with archaeological finds. The surroundings have quiet villages, tea houses and hiking routes. Soppong is simple and calm, with small guesthouses, and a pleasant place to stay two days.

Best time to visit (indicative)

Best from November to February: cool and dry, with chilly mornings in the hills. From February to April smoke and haze from agricultural burning can limit visibility; June to October is the rainy season, green and quiet. Weather varies from year to year; this is a guideline based on the climate.

Getting there

From Pai by minivan or scooter (about 1 hour) along route 1095; from Mae Hong Son about 1.5 to 2 hours. Distances and travel times are rounded estimates.
