About Nakhon Phanom
Nakhon Phanom lies on the Mekong, which forms the border with Laos here, in northeastern Thailand. The city has a lovely riverfront with a long cycle path and promenade, and across the river you see the hills of Laos. It is a calm place with strong Vietnamese influence, among other things through the Ho Chi Minh house in the village of Na Chok. Close to town lies Wat Phra That Phanom, an important pilgrimage site. On the bank, eateries serve fresh fish dishes and you can watch the sunset. The town suits a calm stay and fits well on a route along the Mekong from Nong Khai to Mukdahan. Come in the cool season, when the weather is dry and pleasant.
Best time to visit (indicative)
Best from November to February: cool and dry. March to May is very hot; June to October is the rainy season, with green rice fields. From February to April there can be haze from burning fields. Weather varies from year to year; this is a guideline based on the climate.

From Bangkok by flight (about 1.25 hours) or bus (about 10 to 12 hours); from Udon Thani about 3 hours. Distances and travel times are rounded estimates.
