About That Phanom
That Phanom is a small town on the Mekong in Nakhon Phanom province, about 50 km south of the provincial capital. Everything revolves around Wat Phra That Phanom, one of the most important pilgrimage sites in Isaan and Laos. The tall golden chedi, which according to tradition holds a relic of the Buddha, collapsed in 1975 after heavy rain and was then rebuilt. The temple complex is open daily and draws worshippers bringing flowers, candles and incense. In February a large festival is held with parades and markets, when the town is especially busy. The region is also home to the Phu Thai people, with their own dress and dances. A visit fits well on a route along the Mekong, especially in the cool season. Dress modestly when visiting the temple.
Best time to visit (indicative)
Best from November to February: cool and dry. March to May is very hot; June to October is the rainy season, with green rice fields. From February to April there can be haze from burning fields. Weather varies from year to year; this is a guideline based on the climate.
Getting there
From Nakhon Phanom by bus or songthaew (about 1 hour); from Bangkok by flight to Nakhon Phanom or by bus (about 10 to 12 hours). Distances and travel times are rounded estimates.
