About Phayao
Phayao is the capital of the province of the same name in northern Thailand, about 700 km from Bangkok. The town lies on the shore of the large lake Kwan Phayao, which makes a calm backdrop in the morning and evening for walkers, fishermen and sunsets. From the pier you take a boat to Wat Tilok Aram, a temple on a small island in the lake. In the surroundings lie Bo Sib Song, a walking trail past twelve water holes, and Phu Langka Forest Park, the province's only viewpoint for a sea of mist. Phu Sang National Park has a warm waterfall, and Doi Phu Nang National Park two waterfalls where you can swim. Phayao is quiet and little touristy, ideal for those seeking calm between Chiang Rai and Lampang.
Best time to visit (indicative)
Best from November to February: cool and dry, with chilly mornings in the hills. From February to April smoke and haze from agricultural burning can limit visibility; June to October is the rainy season, green and quiet. Weather varies from year to year; this is a guideline based on the climate.
Getting there
From Chiang Rai by bus (about 2 hours) or from Chiang Mai (about 3 to 4 hours); your own transport helps for the parks. Distances and travel times are rounded estimates.
