About Sangkhla Buri
Sangkhla Buri lies in the far northwest of Kanchanaburi province, close to the Myanmar border, at the northern end of the Khao Laem reservoir. It is a remote mountain district with a strong Mon culture. The highlight is the Mon Bridge, a wooden pedestrian bridge of about 400 m, said to be the longest wooden bridge in Thailand, especially lovely at sunrise when monks cross. At low water you can see the remains of the old temple that was submerged in the lake. In the village you can visit the colourful Mon temple complex and the market. From Sangkhla Buri you can also reach Three Pagodas Pass on the border. It is a destination for those who want peace and are willing to take winding mountain roads.
Best time to visit (indicative)
Best from November to February: dry, with cool mornings in the hills. March and April are hot; from June to October it is the rainy season and mountain roads and waterfalls are harder to reach. Weather varies from year to year; this is a guideline based on the climate.
Getting there
From Kanchanaburi by bus or car along a winding mountain road (about 3 to 4 hours); from Bangkok count on a long day. Distances and travel times are rounded estimates.
