About Umphang

Umphang is the southernmost district of Tak province and lies deep in the western highlands, about 165 km south of Mae Sot. The drive takes about five hours along a winding mountain road, and that remoteness is part of its appeal. The area is known for Umphang Wildlife Sanctuary, home to Thi Lo Su, one of the largest waterfalls in Thailand. The Mae Klong River offers rafting and jungle trips. The population includes Karen villages with their own culture and customs. For a visit to the waterfall you usually need a guide or organised trip, and in the rainy season access is often difficult. Umphang is for adventurous travellers who want quiet and rugged nature. Bring a rain jacket and arrange transport in advance. The best window for Thi Lo Su is roughly November to January, shortly after the rains, when plenty of water is still falling.

Best time to visit (indicative)

Best from November to February: dry, with cool mornings in the hills. March and April are hot; from June to October it is the rainy season and mountain roads and waterfalls are harder to reach. Thi Lo Su is at its best roughly from November to January, shortly after the rains; in the rainy season access is often difficult or impossible. Weather varies from year to year; this is a guideline based on the climate.
