About Sukhothai

Sukhothai is a small city in the lowlands of northern Thailand, about 427 km north of Bangkok. The name is mostly associated with the Sukhothai Kingdom (1238 to 1483), often seen as the first capital of the Thai state. The ruins of Sukhothai Historical Park, about 12 km from the modern town, are a UNESCO World Heritage Site and consist of temples, ponds and seated Buddha images in a green park landscape. The park is best explored by bicycle, and bicycles can be rented at a shop opposite the main entrance. Wat Mahathat, Wat Si Chum with its large seated Buddha and Wat Sa Si on an island in a pond are the best known. In November Loy Krathong is celebrated here in lavish style, with lights on the water.

Best time to visit (indicative)

Best from November to February: cool and dry, with chilly mornings in the hills. From February to April smoke and haze from agricultural burning can limit visibility; June to October is the rainy season, green and quiet. Weather varies from year to year; this is a guideline based on the climate.

Getting there

From Bangkok by bus (about 6 to 7 hours) or by flight to the small airport; from Phitsanulok about 1 hour. The park lies 12 km from the new town. Distances and travel times are rounded estimates.

Things to do in Sukhothai

  • Wat Si Chum A large seated Buddha in a tall walled hall, world famous.
  • Wat Sa Si A small temple on an island in a pond, lovely at sunset.
  • Loy Krathong In November locals celebrate the festival of lights with shows in the park.
