About Uttaradit

Uttaradit lies in the lower part of northern Thailand, on the Nan River, and is often skipped by travellers heading from Bangkok to Chiang Mai. The town is quiet and local, with an ordinary town market and temples along the river. In the province lie the Nam Krai caves, including Tham Chan and Tham Tao, where a steep path leads to a large chamber. The region is known for its fruit, such as langsat and durian from Laplae. The Sirikit reservoir in the hills is a good choice for anyone seeking peace and views. Uttaradit is not a classic tourist destination, but if you want a place that is not in every guidebook you will find a simple, relaxed stop here. The town lies on the main railway line to the north, so it can be reached without a car. Take time for a walk along the river in the late afternoon.

Best time to visit (indicative)

Best from November to February: cool and dry, with chilly mornings in the hills. From February to April smoke and haze from agricultural burning can limit visibility; June to October is the rainy season, green and quiet. Weather varies from year to year; this is a guideline based on the climate.

Getting there

From Bangkok by train or bus (about 6 to 8 hours); the town lies on the Bangkok–Chiang Mai rail line. Distances and travel times are rounded estimates.
