About Takua Pa
Takua Pa is a small town on the northern Andaman coast in Phang Nga province, and the administrative centre of the district of the same name. The old town has Sino-Portuguese shophouses from the tin-mining era, and a market is held on Sunday evening. The town is a base for the coast of Khao Lak and for Khao Sok National Park, which lies about an hour's drive away. There is the atmosphere of an ordinary Thai town: markets, eateries and small temples. Takua Pa is less touristy than Khao Lak and suits those who want to see local life. Come from November to April for the driest weather. The town lies about 120 km north of Phuket. Buses between Phuket, Khao Lak and Surat Thani pass through, which makes Takua Pa a handy transfer point.
Best time to visit (indicative)
Best from November to April: dry, sunny and calm seas. September and October are the wettest months; from May to October the sea is often rough and some boat trips do not run. Weather varies from year to year; this is a guideline based on the climate.
Getting there
From Phuket by bus or car (about 2 hours, roughly 130 km); from Khao Lak about 30 minutes. Distances and travel times are rounded estimates.
