About Yala
Yala is a city in Thailand's deep south and the capital of the province of the same name. The city is neatly laid out, with wide streets and parks, and is a junction between Hat Yai, Pattani and Betong. The Yala Central Mosque and the temple Wat Khuha Phimuk, with a reclining Buddha in a cave, show the religious mix. In the province lie the Bang Lang reservoir and the Than To waterfall, and to the south the hills of Betong begin. Yala lies in an area where tensions have existed for years, so check the current travel advice and local sources beforehand. The city is mostly a transit point for those visiting Betong, and a quiet place to see local life. The city lies about 140 km south of Hat Yai on the railway line to Sungai Kolok, so it can be reached by train, bus or minibus.
